Erma discovers printable family tree forms

Our budding genealogist Erma Springer soon discovered that she needed printable family tree forms.

She had carefully followed my advice about how to start tracing her family tree and, as a result, collected quite a lot of information.

"I need some way to keep track of all this stuff", Erma told me. I agreed.

Pedigree Charts
The Bird's Eye View!

I started Erma off with a blank pedigree chart. I asked her to review her research notes and fill in the chart.

Pedigree charts provide you with a snapshot of your research. You see what information you have gathered and what needs to be done.

The following picture is family tree example for my friend Erma:

Glancing at her pedigree chart, Erma could see that she didn't have any information for her great grandparents. It was also evident that she had incomplete dates for some of grandparents.

Tips for Filling in a Pedigree Chart

  • Male ancestors always appear on the upper rung of a pedigree chart and are assigned even numbers. Females are assigned odd numbers.
  • Don't abbreviate names. Spell them out in full.
  • Always write you dates like this: 15 Nov 1895. Using date formats like 12/12/1895 leads to confusion. Which is the month? And which is the year?
  • Always include maiden names for female ancestors. If you don't have this information use brackets. i.e. Jane ( )
  • Note the name and address of the person who completed the pedigree chart. Also include the date it was prepared.
