A wealth of genealogical information awaits you on rootsweb

RootsWeb has been around for a long time.

This website is a collabrative effort, that allows fellow genealogists to connect with each other through user-contributed databases and personal websites hosted by the site.

Genealogists, both beginners and experienced, will find a wealth of free, searchable databases like the "Social Security Death Index", various surname resources, message boards and an astounding 25,000 mailing lists!

One such database, WorldConnect holds over 480 million family trees users have submitted via gedcom. If you're not familiar with this term click here for an explanation: Understanding GEDCOM The best way to get started with this unique website is to enter a surname in the search box that appears at the top of the homepage. For example, I entered the last name "Lytle" which returned results grouped in the following categories:

  • Featured Databases
  • Vital Records
  • Other Searches
  • The Featured Databases category included the subcategories: "Social Security Index" and "WorldConnect".

The Vital Records category included subcategories such as: "Pre-1920 Marriages"; "World War I Draft Index", and so on.

The Other Searches category included subcategories like "Tax and Voters Lists"; "Obituaries"; and "Book Indexes".

This sample search illustrates the wealth of information, as well as the variety of that information found on this website. As always, I caution users to verify the accuracy of any information they found. Much of the data presented on this website has been transcribed and/or submitted by volunteers who are enthusiastic but not necessarily professional researchers. Return to Home Page from rootsweb
